Life Span of Chinchillas

chinchilla 5The web browser searches said that chins are to live 15 to 20 years only. The usual chin body feature is gray in color, and sometimes beige, or black. The size of the body by length is from 8 to 11 inches and weighs ranges from 0.8 to 1.3 pounds. They have big eyes, same with the ears that are also big. They have four sharp incisors that grow continuously. They have short tail and sometimes long tail but very rare to find. They are found in Andes Mountains and is said very rare to find in the wild due to many good intentioned humans who willed to keep chins as a pet. Chinchillas for sale nowadays are known but you have to be very choosy as it is taking responsibility.

In the wild, chins can live for 8 years according to studies. In homes, zoos, or legit pet stores, life span reaches 15 to 20 years. The reasons why it is only estimated for 15 years is because it depends on how they will be taken care of. Check the reasons listed below.

  • They are from good blood. It means that the chins’ parents are good and healthy breed.
  • They are watched from the moment they were born. So as expected, their health concerns are recorded. It means that the health changes and behavioral changes can be easily noticed and treated.
  • They have comfortable housing or caging. They are staying in a cool place, not exceeding to 78 degrees Fahrenheit. They are mostly posted in air-conditioned room to avoid heat stroke attacks.
  • They have good supply of hays as food or pellets. Sometimes they are fed with chetos, pizza crust apple or raisins. In that matter, they are much healthier by food intake.
  • They have clean water supply. Clean water keeps them away from diarrhea and other digestive issues.
  • They have different vitamin or mineral supplements that keep them healthy and well by immune system aspect.
  • They have good chews. They have proper woods to bite to strengthen their teeth or fangs. As their teeth need to be healthy, it keeps them away from loss of appetite, gum, mouth diseases or infections.
  • They have regular veterinary visits for check-ups. Meaning, they are tracked or maintained healthily. Any unusual behavior, or weakness is treated as soon as possible that is why, worsening is prevented.
  • They have proper training. Having training is a good step to healthy living for a chin. From the moment they were born, training in their drinking, eating, time of play, time of sleep, time of exercise and time of gaining trust, the bonding.

chinchilla 6Chinchillas for sale have a great opportunity of living for many years than chins in the wild. Here are the reasons why chins in the wild have lower chances to live:

  • They have no permanent shelter. They stay where they feel cold. It must be under big trunks or roots or caves. When they feel hot and there is nowhere to stay, they might suffer heat stroke. If they survive, better. But 30% chances of living is estimated resulting to not reaching atleast 8 years.
  • They have insufficient foods. Aside from the dry leaves, they may eat, hays are very rare to find in the wild. As pets are supplied with proper and healthy food, chances of being hungry and weak is very low. Chins in the wild are 60% unhealthy, maybe malnourished or suffering from digestive problems. It could be fatal and since there is no treatment is given in the wild. Losing them is counting.
  • They don’t have clean water. They are lucky if they found a good source of water, but this happens very often in the woods. They usually depend on mountain dews or rain water. But they don’t go wet, they know by instinct that they can’t dry themselves easily.
  • They don’t have any supplements to support their body needs at all. All vitamins and minerals are highly recommended as they are blocking any diseases that may attack them. Since there’s no guardian out there, no support at all for these chins.
  • They don’t have any check ups. In the wild, they grow by themselves, no one is watching over them, no treatment will be given and no cure to any diseases.

See the differences of living in the wild and as a pet. It is obvious that pets or well taken-care-of chins can live longer than the ones in the wild.

A great record breaking news was once flashed about a chin named Bouncer. He was owned by Jenny Ann Bowen of United Kingdom, and recorded as the oldest chinchilla ever. Bouncer was born on July 1 1977 and died October 3 2005. He lived for 28 long years and 94 days to total. He was in Guiness World Record claiming the oldest chinchilla recorded.

Of course, criticisms and questions existed, many have doubted since the known longevity they can live is only up to 20 years. But since the date of birth is known as per the seller told Miss Bowen, it is valid. It was more proven when chinchilla specialist studied and agreed that it was really old. Now theories of chins having up to 20 years of lifespan has changed. In most researches you will see 15 to 20 years, but there is no assurance to any statement.

DSC03079-293wThe conclusion we could have is that the pet-type of chins are really open to chance of living longer than usual. Reviews shown that many showed saying they have 24 years old chin, 19 years old chin or 15  years old chins. They are  all pet-type chinchillas.

When it comes to human, we live longer if we live healthy, no vices and not entertaining any negative thoughts. It also goes with pets, if they live healthy, they will live longer. There should be no harmful matters around them, no unhealthy drinks or food intakes, comfortable shelter or there must be proper guardian to watch over them.

Chins fur Proper Care

chinc 3We know that what chins make them much cuddlier is because of their fur. It is not just a fur like on cats or rabbits but it is extraordinary as it reaches 60 hairs per follicle. It has 200,000 hairs per square inch according to studies. Chinchilla for sale has coat which is super fine, and very expensive when made into a winter coat.

Just like any other pets, they can take a bath but not with water. Their fur won’t dry even you wait for a day. It takes days to get real dry. The dust bath is the proper bathing for them. The dust removes dirt, oils and dead skin on chins because it is made of fine fumice. When they roll their body on it, dirt, oils and dead skins are removed as it goes into the skin and passes by to every single hair. They can have the dust bath for not more than an hour. They might think that heir dust bath is also an accessory or a chin 4plaything. It could be their play thing because they will roll with it as it is intended for them to do to wash their fur.

Do not leave the dust bath for a day or two, the fact that they will create a mess. They will possibly use it as their toilet. Chinchilla Coat is very sensitive to grooming; they can be used blower with very low temperature, of fan alone if you want to dry fast their fur. So no water for bathing chins.

For a shelter called cage for them, aside from that it should be non-toxic product, from the bars and base, you could place accessories to brighten the chin’s area like putting toys and exercise effects.

chinchilla 2You can do a do-it-yourself tube or tunnel for them. Get your used tissue carton holders and create an inch alternately holes. Use a long nail and hammer to create holes from side to other side. Just make sure that the tube is bigger than your chin. The created holes will serve as your eye to see if they are just inside resting or sleeping when not around. Take time to collect unpainted wood crafts so they can bite them freely when they want to play. You can check for other stuffs they can play inside your house. They also get bored.

Tips in Buying Chinchilla

chin 2You may have pets as soon as you want it if they are just like cute cats, active dogs or lovely birds. You can easily buy them in pet stores or any other pet stalls, and or through someone. But in buying chins, you have to be very careful in choosing where to buy and their backgrounds. Don’t just look for chins sold at low price but search the chinchilla for sale that is healthy enough and you think can live a long life with you. Remember that some pet stores actually don’t sell chins to find a good owner, but they are just after their profits. There is no assurance that the chin they are selling grew well, take note that if the chin is a little older and the seller is not the one who takes care of them, but a staff or someone else, they do not know its health issues.

chin 1To buy a chin, consider its age, better if it is just 10 weeks baby so could pamper and see them grow. Seeing them grow is important because, that is where you  will see their appearance and figure out what are unusual, also you should observe their behavior.

Without any questions, you can see if your chin has no runny nose, salivating teeth, discharge on eyes, ears or nose or suffering from fur loss. If these are the cases with low price, say NO.
